Tel2 supports four methods of connecting to Asterisk:

Connection TypeExplanation
SIP RegistrationThe default method. A SIP registration is required for every phone number that you will be using.
Registered SIP TrunkOne phone number serves as the "Trunk Pilot Number". This is the only number that needs to be registered which serves as the trunk. Calls to all other numbers are routed through this trunk.
SIP PeeringNo registration is required from the PBX. The IP Address of the PBX and the SIP port (eg 5060) is configured in the Tel2 portal. All calls are sent to this IP Address which must be made available to Tel2 via firewall rules.
IAX2 RegistrationSame as SIP Registration except using the IAX2 protocol. Only supported on Asterisk based PBX systems

Configure Tel2 Connection Type

By default, a Tel2 phone number is ready to connect to Asterisk using the SIP Registration method. You can simply configure your PBX and no changes are needed in the web portal. To use other methods, please follow the following steps:

  1. Login to the Tel2 web portal
  2. Click "Voice" tab at the top of the page
  3. Click "Profiles" on the left hand side of the page
  4. Click the "Connection Type" dropdown and select your preferred method

Connection Type 1: SIP Registration

This is the default so no configuration changes are needed. Simply ensure that SIP Registration is chosen as your connection type and click "Save Default Profile"

Connection Type 2: Registered SIP Trunk

Select "Registered SIP Trunk" as your connection type and select one of your numbers to serve as your "Trunk Pilot Number".

This is the number that you will use as your registration User ID when you configure your PBX

Connection Type 3: SIP Peering

Select "SIP Peering" as your connection type. Enter the IP Address of your PBX in the "Primary IP Address" box. Adjust the "Primary SIP port" and "Transport" options to match your PBX settings. Click "Save Default Profile".

NOTE: Please see our Firewall Configuration Guide for details on how to allow connections from Tel2 to your PBX.

Connection Type 4: IAX2 Registration

Select "IAX2 Registration" as your connection type. Adjust the "IAX2 Inbound Context" setting to match your Asterisk PBX (from-trunk is default in Asterisk). Click "Save Default Profile"
